The kind of art I am most “well known” for is creating henna Mehandi inspired creatures. Henna is an Indian temporary tattoo that is done for weddings and other occasions. Its like the cooler version of having your nails done. It is gorgeous and intricate and addictively fun to do. Plus it is a great way to test out a new tattoo idea without dedication or regret (or should I say “regerts”)
Henna lasts for about 2 weeks on your skin (depending on what area you put it) and stains a reddish brown when it peels off. In the pictures from my Henna party I actually used Jagua which is made from a different plant and stains a blueish black but it is the sane concept.
Because I find that a lot of people can be skeptical about using henna I want to include a little about its history:
Henna is centuries old. It has been used in Egypt and in India for religious ceremonies, weddings and as adornment. Henna is a plant that has a protein in it that causes staining and because of that has been used for temporary tattoos and for hair dye. It is thought that the Mehandi style came about in south India when people realized that covering their hands and feet in the henna mixture kept them cooler. Eventually a creative person took that stain and started to make intricate beautiful designs. If Henna is not pure it can cause health problems like skin irritation and even scarring so you have to be careful where you get it. The henna, for example, at Michaels craft store has bad reviews and has caused allergic reactions to many people, while the Jagua they sell there has great reviews and I personally have never had a problem with it.
Below are pictures from my Henna party and a few of my designs
